Teacher Files Suit Over Firing by NW Indiana District

HAMMOND, Ind. (AP) _ A former northwest Indiana high school teacher and boys' basketball coach acquitted in June of child seduction charges has filed a lawsuit against the school district alleging he was improperly fired.

The Post-Tribune of Merrillville reports Benjamin Chinn of Indianapolis filed his lawsuit against School City of Hammond on Thursday in U.S. District Court in Hammond.

Chinn contends the school board sent a notice of a vote about whether to renew his contract to an address where it knew he no longer lived. He also contends he was told he would receive back pay if he was found not guilty, but has not been paid.

Superintendent Walter Watkins deferred comment to attorney Dave Dickson. A message seeking comment was left at Dickson's office Friday by The Associated Press.
