UPLAND, Ind. (AP): An Indianapolis lawyer has been selected as the next president of Taylor University in Upland.

The Taylor University board of trustees announced the selection of P. Lowell Haines on Thursday. Haines is a 1975 graduate of the Christian liberal arts college in Upland, 75 miles northeast of Indianapolis. Haines has been a member of the board of trustees for 13 years.

Haines will take over as president on June 1, replacing outgoing Taylor President Eugene Habecker, who announced in May he would retire at the end of this school year. He has served as president since 2005.

Haines was vice president for student development at the university from 1985 to 1987 and also served as dean of students, director of student programs and as a residence hall director.
