Taylor School District Waives Kindergartners’ Textbook Fee

KOKOMO, Ind. (AP): The parents of kindergartners in the Taylor Community School district are getting a financial break now that a $152 textbook fee has been waived for their children in the upcoming school year.

The school board approved a plan last week to waive kindergartners' textbook fees for the 2015-16 school year. The district will instead take on those expenses.

Superintendent Chris Smith says he wishes “we could do it K-12, but that's absolutely impossible.”

Smith said waiving the textbook fees will help local families. He says some of the cost would be offset by Indiana's partial reimbursement for students who qualify for free or reduced lunches.

Smith says that adding the textbook fee break could be attractive to families outside the school district.
