Suspect Involved in Northwest Indiana Slayings, Identified

LAKE COUNTY, Ind. (WOWO): In a press conference Monday afternoon, officials with the Hammond Police Department identified the man who confessed to killing one woman and led police to the bodies of six others in northwestern Indiana, as 43-year-old Darren Vann of Gary.


Officials say Vann, had also been convicted of sex crimes in Texas.


So far, the bodies of seven woman have been found. Police say the first victim was part of a prostitution ring. On Friday her body was found in a Motel 6. The Lake County Cororner's office has identified her as 19-year-old Afrika Hardy and said she died after being strangled.


A second victim, found in a Lake County home, has been identified as 35-year-old Anith Jones of Merrillville.


Officials are still working to identify the other victims involved.


Vann was taken into custody on Saturday.


Police say say the investigation may lead to more victims, going back 20 years.
