FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): The Allen County Board of Commissioners decided to vote on a proposed needle-exchange program in a surprise move Monday.
The board passed the exchange by a 2 to 1 vote, shortly after a published hearing on the subject. Therese Brown and Linda Bloom voted yes while Nelson Peters voted no, according to the Journal-Gazette.
The program would allow people to exchange dirty syringes for clean ones. The idea is to slow the spread of hepatitis C and HIV.
The program now goes to the Indiana Board of Health for approval. It’s expected to be approved and the program should begin by July.
