Stutzman: “Marriage Is the Union of One Man and One Woman”

Washington, D.C. U.S. Congressman Marlin Stutzman issued the following statement this morning on the same day that the United States Supreme Court will hear oral arguments on the institution of marriage.

“Regardless of any ruling, referendum, or law, marriage is the union of one man and one woman,” said Stutzman. “Washington cannot redefine marriage any more than it can govern gravity. As the cornerstone of society throughout history, marriage is a unique institution and the safest environment for raising children. My commitment to marriage is matched by my abiding commitment to the civil rights of all individuals—every American must be treated with dignity and respect. However, marriage is neither a civil right nor a political platform. Like many Hoosiers, I hope the court will not legislate from the bench. In the weeks and months ahead, I ask Hoosiers to join me in committing ourselves to the preservation of marriage in our homes, our communities, our state, and our nation.”
