Students, Alumni Vote on New Goshen High School Mascot

GOSHEN, Ind. (AP) _ Goshen High School students and alumni are voting among four finalists to replace the Redskins mascot that the northern Indiana school is retiring next year.

The Elkhart Truth reports (http://bit.ly/1MWlsRM) that alumni who live within the district's boundaries have until 2 p.m. Wednesday to vote. The finalists include the Gladiators, Redhawks, Spartans and Wolfpack. Students voted Tuesday during the school day.

Alumni need to provide two forms of identification, including one with a photo, to vote. Results will be announced Nov. 16 unless the margin of victory is less than 2 percent. Then there will be a runoff.

The Goshen School Board voted in July to stop using the mascot after nearly 90 years.

Those who sought the change argued the Redskins name is offensive and derogatory to Native Americans.
