State Health Officials Urge Vaccinations Before School Starts

INDIANAPOLIS (WOWO): Back to school means more than pencils, paper, lunchboxes, writing pads, and trapper keepers—it means you need to get your kid to the doctor.

State Health officials are reminding parents to make sure that their children are up to date on their vaccinations. State Health Department Commissioner Jerome Adams says these vaccines will ensure that your child and the children they encounter every day will stay healthy.

Indiana has had troubles in recent years with outbreaks of chicken pox and tuberculosis. In 2012 Vigo County saw a massive outbreak of Chickenpox that at the time was the biggest in the country. That all started with a child that wasn't vaccinated. Last year there were confirmed cases of TB at Southport High School in Indianapolis and at a school district in Clark County.

Officials are also highly encouraging children 11 and up get their HPV vaccines, and that includes boys and girls. Indiana was recently ranked among the worst in the country when it came to HPV vaccination rates.

You can find what vaccines your child needs for school at the State Department of Health's website.
