State Examiner Wants Higher Indiana Audit Fees

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – State Examiner Paul Joyce is pressing Indiana lawmakers to increase the daily rate for state audits, saying his office needs more money to properly scout government entities for signs of fraud.

The Evansville Courier and Press reports that Joyce, who heads the State Board of Accounts, is proposing an increase in the daily rate for an audit from $45 to $175.

Joyce recently told the State Budget Committee his department lacks sufficient staffing and is not meeting its responsibilities under state law to monitor municipalities, school districts and other government entities for signs of fraud. He told the panel “something needs to give.”

Republican Senator Luke Kenley of Noblesville says lawmakers need to find a solution because the audits are critical to the “good operation of government.”
