St. Joseph Central meningitis outbreak costs county health dept $18k

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): An investigation has been wrapped up and a patient with Neisseria Meningitis is has been released from medical care and is recovering.

In early December, Fort Wayne Community Schools sent home a letter to parents saying someone at St. Joseph Central Elementary school had bacterial meningitis.

Students and faculty were provided with preventative antibiotics and prophylaxis dispensary clinic was available. During the clinic a total of 449 people received prophylaxis.

Overall the cost of the event was over $18 thousand and that doesn’t include some overtime wages.
