ST. JOHN, Ind. (AP): Residents of St. John have asked officials to look into making trains operate more quietly along the railroad in the Tree Springs subdivision.
Councilman Greg Volk recently brought the request to the council, and Town Manager Steve Kil said he would look into whether the Norfolk Southern crossings meet the requirements so trains wouldn't have to blow their horns.
Although Council President Michael Forbes is in favor of quiet zones, he said they could cost the town up to $400,000 per crossing.
Kil said it might be possible for the crossing improvements to be included in road improvements planned as part of a large commercial project in the town.
A joint project with Schererville to establish a quiet zone at another crossing is ongoing.
