Southern Indiana Prepares to Add New Area Code

INDIANAPOLIS (WOWO): The days of dialing 7 digit phone numbers in the 812 area code will be a thing of the past. Instead, customers will be required to start dialing full 10 digit numbers (the regular number plus the area code) for everything, including local calls.

Natalie Derrickson with the IURC says the change is in preparation for an area code overlay that will have new phone numbers under the 930 code. The change is happening because 812 is projected to run out of possible number combinations, of which there are about 7 million. The concept may sound complicated, but its really not.

Your current phone number will not change, you still dial 1 before the area code for long distance, and there is no change to 911 or other service lines. The 930 area code will start being assigned to new numbers on March 7th.
