SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) _ South Bend's city council has approved a plan that would fund improvements to downtown streets and sidewalks by offering $25 million in bonds.
The council voted 6 to 1 on Monday for work related to the Smart Streets program, which was introduced by the city's mayor in 2013.
The project would convert certain downtown streets to two-way traffic. Roundabouts would also be built, and protected bike lanes and on-street parking would be added.
Opponents of the project say the city should focus on keeping neighborhoods safe and fixing streets in disrepair.
Work is expected to begin this year and finish by the end of 2016.
