South Bend Area Pummeled by Snow

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) _ The first major winter storm in northern Indiana has created havoc for motorists from Valparaiso to Fort Wayne, but the South Bend area might have endured the worst of it.

South Bend Police Capt. Phil Trent says officers responded to 121 reported crashes between 5 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Thursday. He says at one point Thursday morning, 42 police units were working crashes, and detectives, specialty unit members, off-duty officers and volunteers were helping patrol officers with the crash load.

South Bend schools spokeswoman Sue Coney says several school buses were in minor accidents but no injuries were reported.

The conditions led the Transpo bus line to suspend service for several hours.

The National Weather Service measured 5 inches of snow in the South Bend area.
