Slain Indianapolis Officer Awarded Medal of Honor

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ Mourners are paying their respects to an Indianapolis police officer fatally wounded in a gun battle with a man armed with an assault rifle.

Visitation for Officer Perry Renn was being held Thursday at Crown Hill Funeral Home. Before it began, Mayor Greg Ballard, Police Chief Rick Hite and other members of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department participated in a ceremony in which Renn received the Medal of Honor and a Purple Heart. Renn's family and other officers from the North District shift patrol that Renn worked attended the ceremony.

Hite said that by putting on his uniform and going to work every day, Renn made Indianapolis a great place to live.

Renn was killed Saturday night. His funeral is Friday at Bankers Like Fieldhouse.
