Single Car Crash Sends One Man to the Hospital

On Thursday, November 1, 2012, around 11:40 a.m., the City of Fort Wayne Police Department responded to the 4900 block of St. Joe Rd, Ivy Tech, reference a single-vehicle personal injury accident.  Upon arrival, officers located the vehicle, a 1997 white Cadillac, in a campus parking lot.  The vehicle had collided with a light pole and was still occupied by the driver.  First responders rendered aid and transported the driver/victim to a local hospital in serious condition.  Upon arrival at the hospital, the victim’s condition was downgraded to critical condition by a hospital physician.

Preliminary reports indicate that the vehicle was initially traveling southbound on St. Joe Rd. and was preparing to turn westbound into the nearby Canterbury apartment complex.  According to witness statements, the vehicle accelerated and drove off of the roadway and struck several trees and a large rock.  The vehicle then came back onto St. Joe Rd. eastbound, crossing all lanes of traffic, and over the street median, and continued at a high rate of speed directly into the Ivy Tech parking lot until the vehicle collided with a light pole where it came to a final rest.  The driver was the sole occupant of the vehicle and was reportedly wearing his seat belt. There were no other injuries reported at the scene and no other vehicles struck.

At this time, investigators believe a medical condition to be a possible contributing factor in this single-vehicle accident.  The incident remains under investigation by the F.A.C.T. (Fatal Alcohol Crash Team).  There is nothing further at this time.
