Shutdown shutters Starbase Indiana classes

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP):  More than 200 students have had technology classes canceled at the Fort Wayne's Air National Guard Base because of the partial government shutdown.

The Starbase Indiana program came to a halt Oct. 1 because the Department of Defense funding for the contractor running it hasn't been extended.

Guard base spokesman Sgt. Darin Hubble tells says 120 elementary students had completed four of their five days at Starbase when the program was suspended. Fifth-graders typically attend classes there one day a week for five weeks.

Classes were canceled this week for 120 more students. A typical class has 30 students learning about robotics, rocketry, and 3-D design and printing.

Starbase Indiana's three-person staff has been furloughed without pay during the shutdown.
