Sheriff Wants Stoplight on I-65 Detour Near Fatal Crash Site

LEBANON, Ind. (AP) _ An Indiana sheriff is calling for added safety measures on part of a detour for Interstate 65 after a fatal crash.

A woman was killed in the crash Tuesday near State Highway 47 on U.S. 52, which is included in the detour set up because of the closure of a northbound I-65 bridge near Lafayette. Boone County Sheriff Mike Nielsen told reporters Wednesday that the detour has made an intersection near the crash site worse.

Nielsen said he has asked for a stoplight there many times, and expressed frustration with the Indiana Department of Transportation in a Facebook post Tuesday.

The department said in a statement that crash data indicate a stoplight at that location wouldn't have prevented Tuesday's crash or others since the detour. The department says it has implemented other measures, including a lower speed limit.
