Sheriff quitting amid prostitute investigation

LEBANON, Ind. (AP): A central Indiana sheriff has decided to step down as the department says he's under investigation for involvement with an alleged prostitute over the past few years.

Boone County Sheriff Ken Campbell announced Thursday night that he would be submitting his retirement paperwork and leaving the position he's held since 2007.

Campbell said in a statement that he didn't believe he had done anything illegal, but apologized for what he called “serious errors of judgment in my personal life.''

Chief Deputy Mike Nielsen will take over as acting sheriff in the county just northwest of Indianapolis. Nielsen says he asked Campbell to resign after learning in recent days about the investigation involving the FBI.

Nielsen says he doesn't know whether Campbell will face criminal charges.
