Services Set for Slain Indiana Police Officer

MERRILLVILLE, Ind. (AP): Visitation for a slain Merrillville police officer is scheduled for Sunday, with his funeral the following day.

Squad cars from Indiana and Illinois joined a procession Wednesday as a hearse brought the body of Merrillville Patrolman Nickolaus Schultz from Chicago to a funeral home in his hometown of Lowell.

The Times of Northwest Indiana reports blue ribbons lined the town's streets and dozens of officers saluted as Schultz's body was removed from the hearse.

The 24-year-old officer died Sunday, two days after a man wearing body armor shot him during an apparent ambush. Officials say that man then fatally shot himself.

Schultz's visitation is set for 2-7 p.m. Sunday at the Star Plaza Theatre in Merrillville. His funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday at the 3,400-seat theater.
