Second officer identified in Fort Wayne deadly officer-involved shooting

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): Indiana State Police identified another officer involved in a shooting that killed a Fort Wayne man Sunday night.

Trooper John. J. Grant is a nine-year veteran of the state police. He also worked with the Chicago Police Department before the state department for five year, according to the Journal Gazette.

A state police spokesman says Grant has been given 12 commendations during his time with the Indiana State Police.

Around 9:30 p.m. Sunday, police were called to the AutoZone on Rudisill Boulevard on reports of gunfire.

When Grant and Fort Wayne officer David Wilkins arrived, police say the suspect fled and fired shots at the officers.

Both officers returned fire and shot and killed the suspect, later identified as Abraham Martinez, 62, of Fort Wayne.

It’s not clear which officer fired the shot that killed him.

Before police arrived, Martinez allegedly shot a man inside the store who was taken to an area hospital.
