S. Indiana Boy Dies After Shot in Head by Brother

NORTH VERNON, Ind. (AP) _ Authorities say a 12-year-old southern Indiana boy has died after being shot in the head when his older brother mishandled a rifle.

Jennings County sheriff’s Sgt. James Blevins said Thursday that Seth Box died at Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis. Emergency workers found Seth unresponsive after he was shot by his 16-year-old brother late Monday at the family’s rural home several miles north of North Vernon.

Blevins tells The Republic of Columbus that family members had been target shooting earlier in the day and the older teen wrongly assumed the rifle was unloaded. Other family members were sleeping when the shooting happened at the home about 50 miles southeast of Indianapolis.
