S. Ind. Couple Back Home After Atlantic Rescue

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP): A southern Indiana couple is back home after being rescued by a Coast Guard helicopter from their damaged sailboat in the Atlantic Ocean.

Gunther and Doris Rodatz of Bloomington say they were in their recently purchased 42-foot-long catamaran sailboat with two professional sailors taking the boat from New York to the Virgin Islands when they encountered nearly 70 mph winds and 20-foot waves.

Gunther Rodatz tells The Herald-Times they felt safe until a massive wave submerged much of the boat at night. Waves last weekend damaged the rudder. After repair attempts failed, they were rescued Tuesday about 300 miles off the Virginia coast.

The Rodatzes arrived back in Bloomington on Thursday, only to find a broken water pipe had flooded a bedroom and bathroom at their home.
