Ritz weighs in on the final year of the ISTEP exam

INDIANAPOLIS (WOWO): This will be the last year student’s take the ISTEP test.

Superintendent of Public Instruction Glenda Ritz says students need to get a good night’s rest and good meal to prepare for the test. If you have any questions about the test you can visit the Department of Education’s website.

Ritz is excited that this test will be done away with after the school year. “Student assessments should be given to gauge student performance and growth and improve and individualize instruction. Instead, in its current form, ISTEP has become an assessment focused on evaluating our teachers and grading our schools. That is why I will continue to work with state policy makers to remove the high-stakes associated with the ISTEP assessment and allow teachers to get back to teaching instead of testing.”

Governor Pence signed the bill eliminating ISTEP earlier this week. This will go into effect next July. The bill creates a 23-member commission to recommend a replacement test.
