REPORT: Fort Wayne Abortion Clinic Cited for Unsanitary, Unsafe Conditions

  • FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): A State Department of Health inspection uncovers serious concerns at a Fort Wayne abortion clinic.

Details released today by Allen County Right Life say the State Department of Health found unsafe and unsanitary conditions in December at Dr. Ulrich Klopfer's clinic on Inwood Drive.

The report cited numerous violations including:

*Hairs, six to eight inches in length, and dust, found near the head of the exam table
*Broken plaster on the lab's ceiling and in patient bathrooms
*Dead spider and large cobweb in the waiting room
*Buckled and cracked walls in patient bathrooms causing holes as large as 10 inches
*Cracked ceiling above sterilizers causing a six to eight inch hole
*Procedure rooms too small for procedures where conscious sedation was used
*No hand washing stations in procedure rooms
    *Broken drinking fountain
*No separate recovery room that provides privacy to patients

In a press release, Cathie Humbarger with Allen County Right to Life called it “unacceptable” and “hazardous.” She added the center can't show licenses for nurses, doesn't have CPR certification and doesn't take infection control seriously.

Klopfer has been been under scrutiny for allegedly not reporting under age abortions in a timely fashion. A back-up doctor who was authorized to admit patients for post-procedure complications ended his relationship with Klopfer in January 2013.

Abortions were suspended at that time.
