Religious Hiring Measure Appears Dead in Legislature

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ A measure that would allow religious-affiliated organizations to hire employees based on religion and require workers to follow certain religious tenets appears unlikely to advance this year.

The Indiana Senate approved the bill in February, but it wasn't heard in the House.

The measure would have allowed the hiring guidelines even if organizations receive state contracts.

Republican State Sen. Travis Holdman of Markle authored the bill. He says it would have put Indiana in line with federal law and that he filed it to help Indiana Wesleyan University obtain state workforce training grants.

The bill was one of several targeting religious issues this year. A religious objections law sparked boycotts amid fears it could be used as a defense for discrimination against the LGBT community.
