Rebuilding Work to Close US 31 in Central Indiana

CARMEL, Ind. (AP) _ State highway officials plan to shut down a section of U.S. 31 through the northern suburbs of Indianapolis starting in April as part of the project upgrading it to interstate standards.

The state agency says the plan to close the highway through much of Carmel will allow for faster completion of the project, with the aim of finishing the freeway sections in Hamilton County by the end of next year.

The U.S. 31 closure is scheduled to begin April 4 and reopen by Thanksgiving Day.

The Carmel work is part of a $1.2 billion reconstruction project for U.S. 31 linking Indianapolis and South Bend. Other major parts include the new bypass around Kokomo and a new roadway section being built between South Bend and Plymouth.
