INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – Plans to upgrade more than 100 miles of train tracks between Indianapolis and Kentucky are getting mixed reactions in Indiana.

The proposal from Louisville and Indiana Railroad and CSX Transportation calls for CSX to spend up to $100 million to upgrade tracks between Indianapolis and Louisville, Kentucky to handle larger and faster freight trains.

WISH-TV reports the upgrades would mean trains could travel as fast as 49 miles per hour in certain areas and cars could carry loads closer to 286,000 pounds. The improvements also would increase the number of trains in Columbus, Indianapolis and Seymour.

Columbus Mayor Kristen Brown says she's concerned the increased traffic would inconvenience motorists and create safety hazards. But economic leaders say more trains will bring an increase in jobs.
