Quiet Tornado Season a Year After 14 Die in Indiana

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) _ It’s been a quiet tornado season so far in Indiana, but experts caution it’s far from over.

Preliminary reports from the National Weather Service indicate Indiana has had four weak tornadoes this year, including two with winds of about 80 mph that struck near Terre Haute on May 9. Two others occurred in southern Indiana on Jan. 30.

The National Severe Storms Laboratory reports there were 197 tornadoes rated EF1 or stronger nationwide from May 2012 to April 2013. That’s the lowest number since at least 1954.

Indiana had a total of 10 tornadoes during that span. Four were rated EF1. The others were all EF0.

National Weather Service meteorologist Greg Carbin says tornado seasons are difficult to predict because there are so many factors involved.
