Purdue University Imposes Strict Rules on Student Candidates

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) – Three Purdue University students running for West Lafayette City Council will have to jump through administrative hoops in order to campaign on campus.

Donnie Spencer, Joelle Jones and Aseem Jha are vying for the seat for District 3, which encompasses the campus. Each of them will have to seek approval from the department of residential life and a permit before knocking on dorm room doors. An escort belonging to dorm staff also is required to accompany the candidates during specific canvassing hours.

The (Lafayette) Journal and Courier (http://on.jconline.com/1Lajuql ) reports any student wishing to canvass on Purdue property must obtain written approval from the Office of the Dean of Students.

The school's campaign restrictions may also require student candidates to secure additional approval from specific building directors.
