WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) – Two teams of Purdue University students have been awarded nearly $20,000 for projects intended to boost an African village's water supply and design a new type of African grain thresher.

The funding from the Purdue Center for Global Food Security will finance the projects' design and development costs and the students' travel to the project sites.

Six Purdue students received a $10,000 grant to devise ways to provide an adequate water supply for drinking water, crops and livestock in the village of Endallah, Tanzania. Those students are collaborating on that project with the Nelson Mandela African Institute of Science and Technology.

A four-student team was awarded another $8,500 to develop a multigrain thresher that's intended to reduce crop losses and boost profits while reducing the labors of African farmers.
