Public Hearings Planned on Proposed South Shore Rate Hikes

       CHESTERTON, Ind. (AP) _ The board that oversees the South Shore commuter rail line in northwest Indiana plans to hold public hearings on proposed fare increases ranging from 10 percent to 15 percent.
 
       The Times of Munster reports (http://bit.ly/1BVfRAp ) the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District trustees voted unanimously Thursday to hold the hearings. The proposal calls for the one-way fare from Hammond to Chicago to increase to $6 from its current $5.25 and from South Bend to Chicago to $13 from its current $11.75.
 
       The proposal also calls for people paying fares on the train after boarding at stations that have ticket agents or ticket machines would pay $2 more.
 
       The South Shore's last fare increase was 5 percent in 2012. The increase would produce about $1.5 million more in revenue.
