INDIANAPOLIS (AP): Lawmakers plan to rework the Indiana State Board of Education by postponing changes to its leadership until after the 2016 election.
Senate Republicans unveiled a proposal Monday to allow the board to choose its own leader, but not until Democratic state schools Superintendent Glenda Ritz completes her first term in office.
The plan also would give the board new authority over the ISTEP standardized test for students.
Previous versions of the measure would have allowed the leadership change this summer, likely ousting Ritz from her position. Opponents say this disenfranchised voters who elected her as superintendent in 2012.
Republican leaders say they want to address dysfunction between Ritz and other board members, who are appointees of Republican Gov. Mike Pence.
Lawmakers face a Wednesday deadline to reach a final agreement.
