Propane Amendment

INDIANA, (WOWO): Some Indiana state senators have offered up an amendment they say will help Hoosiers affected by the Midwest propane shortage. The amendment to Senate Bill 1 eliminates the sales tax on propane that costs more than $2.50 a gallon.

Senators John Waterman (R-Shelburn), Doug Eckerty (R-Yorktown) and Jim Smith (R-Charlestown) announced the amendment Tuesday morning. They‘ll officially introduce it to a Senate committee Tuesday afternoon. Sen. Waterman says if the move is ultimately approved, customers would get a credit on their next propane bill. He says it would offset the sales tax paid on any charges above $2.50 a gallon.

Sen. Eckerty says propane costs in Indiana have more than doubled in the past two weeks. It was selling for a historic high of $2.98 a gallon in Indiana on January 20th. However, some reports now put that figure much higher. Sen. Waterman says the shortage is due to strong farm yields and use of propane to dry grain in addition to overall high industrial use.
