MOUNT VERNON, Ind. (AP) _ The commissioners of southwestern Indiana's Posey County have voted to take ownership of a Wabash River bridge that's been closed for more than two years because of unsafe conditions.
The commissioners voted 2-1 to take legal ownership of the New Harmony Bridge between Indiana and Illinois but only if conditions spelled out by their attorney are met.
The Evansville Courier & Press reports the commissioner in August committed themselves to taking over the bridge, but that didn't involve a title transfer. Commissioners Jim Alsop and Jerry Walden say terms they attached to that commitment on Tuesday will protect Posey County from financial risk.
New Harmony residents who've pushed for the transfer say the commissioners' requirements likely will keep the bridge's future in doubt for the foreseeable future.
