Police say S. Indiana boy shot in head by brother

NORTH VERNON, Ind. (AP) _ Authorities in southern Indiana say a 16-year-old boy handling a rifle accidentally shot his 12-year-old brother in the head.

The Jennings County sheriff’s department says the younger boy was not responsive after being shot late Monday at the family’s rural home several miles north of North Vernon.

The Republic of Columbus and WTHR-TV report the boy was taken by helicopter to Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis, but information about his condition wasn’t immediately released.

Detective Sgt. Jim Blevins says family members had been shooting firearms earlier in the day. Other family members were sleeping when the shooting happened at the home about 50 miles southeast of Indianapolis.
