Police Catch Identity Thief

VALPARAISO, Ind. (WOWO):  A Hazel Crest, Illinois man was taken into custody by the Indiana State Police when he used someone else's identity to try to purchase a $67,000 vehicle.

State Police were tipped off on March 14th when a local Fort Wayne dealership raised some concern during a purchase of a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT.  Glenbrook Dodge says an individual from LaGrange, Illinois filled out a form to get financing on the Jeep valued at $66,988, but they were concerned of alleged identity deception.

The suspect even sent a copy of his drivers license to the dealership.  It was during the person's credit check that they found a problem.  Additional research discovered the person attempting to buy the Jeep was not the same as the identity on the license.

The suspect, later identified as 34 year old Carl Wright of Hazel Crest, said he was not willing to drive to Fort Wayne to pick up the vehicle but wanted to arrange pick-up in northwest Indiana.  Wright drove to Wheel Unlimited in Valparaiso where he completed the fraudulent paperwork and financial papers using the identity theft victim's information.

Wright was taken into custody and taken to the Porter County Jail.  He's charged with Identity Deception, Forgery and Attempted Theft.

A second person was also arrested.  19 year old Devon Abercrombie of Chicago, Illinois drove with Wright to pick up the vehicle.  He's charged with Possession of Marijuana and also taken to the Porter County Jail.
