Police Arrest Dad after Finding Child in Hot Car

COLUMBUS, Ind. (AP) _ Police have rescued a 2-year-old boy from a car parked at a central Indiana shopping mall in 90-degree heat.

The boy's father was being held Friday in Bartholomew County Jail on preliminary charges of child neglect, possession of marijuana and possession of paraphernalia.

Police arrested 27-year-old James Elgar after finding him passed out in the car Thursday at the FairOaks Mall in Columbus, about 40 miles southeast of Indianapolis.

Columbus police spokesman Lt. Matt Myers says temperatures were in the low 90s when someone passing by called police. The Republic reports  officers found the Elizabethtown man slumped over the car's steering wheel and summoned medics when they saw the child in the back seat. The driver's side door was open.

It isn't clear whether Elgar has an attorney.
