Polar Bear Plunge has Crowds Running Through the St. Joseph River

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): The Annual Polar Bear Plunge took place yesterday on the St. Joseph River, with a water temperature measuring a cool 33 degrees.

Johnny Appleseed Park was packed yesterday afternoon as Polar Bear Plungers got ready to run through the St. Joseph river. It's a Fort Wayne tradition and some residents have been taking the plunge every New Year's Day for the last 30 years.

The Journal Gazette reports the Fort Wayne Fire Department measured the temperature of the river at 33 degrees. There's no official “Polar Bear Club,”  just a crowd of local residents who are crazy enough to jump into some icy water to celebrate the New Year in Fort Wayne.
