Pence Says Gambling Regulators Need to Use ‘Common Sense’

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ Gov. Mike Pence says gambling regulators need to be more thoughtful when they go about enforcing state gaming laws.

His remarks Wednesday came after officials at a Muncie senior center say the Indiana Gaming Commission told them that residents could no longer pay a few dollars to play the card game euchre and a chance at token prizes including cookies and toilet paper.

Pence says the state never intended to crack down on the seniors' euchre games, as was widely reported Monday. He says state gaming officials were simply trying to explain the law's requirements.

The Republican governor emphasized that it's important to “use common sense'' when enforcing the law. And he says he's open to clarifying gambling laws to explicitly allow groups to play similar games.
