Pence Orders Memorials for Officers Who Died

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ Indiana Gov. Mike Pence has declared this week an official period of mourning after the loss of three law enforcement officers in the line of duty over eight days.

Pence on Monday ordered flags to be lowered across the state during the period, which the governor is calling a “week of heartbreak.''

Thirty-one-year-old Tipton County Deputy Jacob Calvin of Kempton died June 28 when his car crashed while he was responding to an automobile accident. Fifty-one-year-old Indianapolis Police Office Perry Renn died in a gun fight Saturday and 47-year-old Gary Police Officer Jeffrey Westerfield was found shot in his patrol car Sunday.

Pence says it's fitting that communities throughout the state show solidarity at this time.

Pence traveled Monday to Lake County to meet with Westerfield's family.
