Pence Mourns Loss of New Carlisle Firefighter

NEW CARLISLE, Ind. (AP) _ Gov. Mike Pence says Indiana is mourning the loss of a northern Indiana firefighter.

Pence says New Carlisle Assistant Fire Chief Jamie Middlebrook was “a true Hoosier hero'' who gave his life protecting the safety of others.

The LaPorte County coroner says the 41-year-old Middlebrook was fatally injured Tuesday night when a roof collapsed on him while he helped fight a fire at K-Fex Excavating and Trucking about 15 miles west of South Bend.

Pence say he and first lady Karen Pence extend their condolences to Middlebrook's family and friends and hold them in their prayers.
