Pence Looks to Salvage Agenda with Preschool Pitch

INDIANAPOLIS (AP): Indiana Gov. Mike Pence is making a last-ditch effort to salvage a key piece of his legislative agenda that would expand preschool education for low-income families.
Pence is heading Wednesday to the Shepherd Community Center in Indianapolis to highlight his request that the state provide vouchers for children from low-income families to attend preschool.
The governor never offered his own proposal, but instead threw his support behind a House Republican plan that would have established a pilot program. But the measure ran into concerns in the Senate, where lawmakers amended it to create a committee that would study the issue.
Pence's agenda has struggled to gain traction in the General Assembly during his second session. Other key measures backed by the governor have either been delayed or watered down.
