INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ More lanes will be built on two sections of Interstate 65 using $200 million in additional Indiana highway funds being released this year.
Gov. Mike Pence announced plans Thursday to use the money to expand I-65 immediately south of Indianapolis and near Lafayette during a news conference.
The General Assembly approved the funds this year. Lawmakers originally intended to put away $200 million each year for 20 years to pay for future large construction projects, but Pence requested the first two years of savings to be released this year despite concerns from Senate budget writers about spending the money too soon.
The remaining $200 million in highway funding is being held pending a review of the state's finances in December.
