Payment Plans Help Ease Student Loan Burden

MUNCIE, Ind. (AP) _ Indiana college graduates struggling under the weight of student loan debt could find it easier to manage under a federal program that bases payments on income and forgives debt sooner for those working in the public or nonprofit sectors.
 
  The U.S. Department’s “income-based repayment” program began in 2009, but many Indiana college students are just now learning about it.
 
  The Star Press reports the program caps monthly payments at affordable rates based on income. It also forgives loans after 10 years for those working for a nonprofit or government agency.
 
  Two-thirds of four-year college graduates nationally had student loan debt averaging $26,600 per borrower in 2011.
