SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) _ Public records say South Bend schools mistakenly overpaid 48 new teachers by a total of $140,000.
District officials previously would not say by how much teachers were overpaid.
The records obtained by the South Bend Tribune (http://bit.ly/1HPsEXq ) say the salaries of 48 of 178 new hires were set too high. The widest gap was a nearly $68,000 salary for one teacher who should have made $47,600. Overpayments of $5,000 or more were made to six teachers.
Salaries were too low for six other teachers, totaling about $3,600. The district will make up the difference.
Reasons officials have given for the mistakes include principals quoting salaries without review and a failure to follow past pay scale practices.
The school board earlier this week approved $175,000 for stipends split among a group of other teachers as a goodwill gesture.
