FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): A man was shot to death by police after a standoff in Fort Wayne.

At about 11:07 p.m. Thursday, police were called to Stony Run Lane. When officers arrived, they found a man with a knife, according to the Fort Wayne Police Department.

Police say the suspect grabbed a young child, retreated into a home and refused to come out.

The Fort Wayne Emergency Services Team and the Crisis Response Team were called to the scene, and negotiators tried to communicate to the suspect.

Policed started communication through a loud speaker, but were finally able to reach him through a phone they threw into the home.  Discussions lasted for hours, but escalated shortly before 5 a.m. when the suspect said he was going to harm the child.

The Emergency Team forced their way into the house and saw the man was armed with two large edged weapons and standing over the child, according to police.

The Fort Wayne Police Department said officers fired shots at the man in order to save the child’s life.

The child was unharmed, but the suspect died.

The officers who fired the shots are on administrative leave per policy and allow for the investigation to take course.
