One dead after Kosciusko County crash

KOSCIUSKO COUNTY, Ind. (WOWO): Kosciusko County officials are currently investigating a fatal traffic incident that happened Friday night near Atwood, Indiana.

Just after 7:30 p.m., crews responded to the intersection of U.S. 30 and County Road 800 West after a report of a property damage accident. Once on the scene, officials received a secondary call of a personal injury crash at the same location. Emergency responders arrived and located a vehicle that had been struck from behind by another vehicle driven by a 29-year-old Danielle Underwood of Fort Wayne. A male passenger located inside of the first vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene by the Kosciusko County Coroner’s Office from blunt force trauma.

Officials say that a preliminarily investigation into the crash has determined that shortly after the first call of the property damage crash, the driver of the victim’s vehicle, 25-year-old Bert Hyde of Etna Green, had stopped near the edge of the westbound passing lane of U.S. 30. Hyde had purportedly exited his vehicle to assist in the original property damage crash, when his vehicle was then struck by the westbound vehicle driven by Underwood. Underwood was transported to a Fort Wayne hospital in serious condition.
