Officials Assess Damage in Jay County

PORTLAND, Ind. (WOWO): The local emergency management office will begin the process of assessing damage in Jay County today. Portland was under a state of emergency after the town was hit with wave after wave of torrential rain.

However, that declaration was lifted Wednesday as floodwaters started to recede. Five inches of rain fell early Tuesday morning in just four hours. The latest deluge put at least nine square blocks of Portland’s business district under water–and forced the closure of city hall.

Portland is looking for a long-term fix for its flood issues. A brand-new sewer system is likely the answer, but the multi-million dollar price tag remains out of reach. Governor Pence and Congressman Marlin Stutsman toured the area Wednesday.
