Off-Duty Toll Road Corporal Saves Life Of Cromwell Man

NOBLE COUNTY, Ind. (WOWO): An off-duty State Police Corporal helped save the life of a 56 year old man struggling in Knapp Lake.

On Friday around 5:45 p.m., Corporal Peter L. Bradley took notice to a paddle boat with two adults and two kids. The rear of the boat was under water, so the officer ran to shore and yelled to ask if they needed help. The kids were wearing life jackets, but the adults were not. When the four in the boat tried to swim to shore, the boat flipped, and 56 year old Randall James Nicodemus struggled to stay above water.

The officer jumped into the water and started to swim to Nicodemus, who would disappear underwater for 10 to 20 seconds at a time and was trying to hold onto a 4 year old wearing a life jacket to stay afloat. Bradley was able to grab onto Nicodemus and pull him to the surface and swim back to shore. The other adult and both boys were able to swim back on their own.

Noble County EMS was contacted and Nicodemus was taken to the hospital in Goshen for treatment. Alcohol was a factor and the incident remains under investigation.
